Preparing for Worship_6/29/25
In what can seem like a disjointed turn from the church, marriage, family, and work, this Sunday we will look at “spiritual warfare” in Ephesians 6:9-18. This only seems disjointed until we see the reality that it is in our closest relationships and most important areas to us that the enemy, satan, seeks to cause us to doubt God and his goodness.
“What does Ephesians actually teach us about spiritual warfare? And what are the implications of the gospel for how we respond to the multiple schemes of our defeated foe? Right out of the gate, Paul puts the emphasis where it belongs. Before he says anything about the devil or spiritual warfare, he delivers a proactive admonition to all of us. “Be strong in the Lord”—that is, abide in Jesus, and let his Word abide in you…The devil also loves to convince us that our primary opposition in life comes from ordinary people, including members of our own household. He would rather have us cast blame on easy flesh-and-blood targets than defend ourselves against his cosmic powers and spiritual forces…Paul describes the God of the Bible as an armor-wearing God. He is not just the equipment manager dispensing boots, grenades, and rifles. God is the quintessential warrior himself, committed to evil’s eradication and his bride’s glorification.’ – Scotty Smith
